Network Administrator

Job Description

Network Administrator | Capital University | Columbus, OH

At our partner institution at Capital University

The Network Administrator will work to maintain the network infrastructure. The position requires collaborative work within a team of network and system administrators to ensure IT services are functioning effectively. This position also requires the ability to assist in end-user systems support and maintenance as needed.

Hours of operation are Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Hours may vary.

Responsibilities

Work within a team of technical staff to maintain the network infrastructure

Configure and upgrade switches, routers, firewalls, wireless access points, and network services such as DNS, DHCP, and related network security services

Maintain documentation on all network equipment including configuration files, quick reference guides, knowledge base articles, FAQs, and network maps & drawings

Collaborate with the Facilities Department, as well as vendors, to install all cabling and ensure that cable installations meet industry standards and best practices including certifications and appropriate labeling.

Assists with the implementation of Changes (especially those that involve project task work) approved by the CAB (Change Advisory Board), and/or Technical Director & CIO.

Work with and configure internal and external monitoring systems to ensure alerts are being generated for service outages

Conduct capacity planning by developing procedures to measure the capacity for network devices and hosted applications relative to current and future activities. Based on these metrics, coordinate the acquisition of additional network resources as necessary in support of a healthy infrastructure lifecycle plan and in support of institutional mission, values, and strategic goals

Work closely with the remote Network Administrators and Systems Administrators to ensure network security and manage network wide security including all connecting devices. This includes managing security policies, procedures and reviews.

Maintain network schema documentation including a list of statically assigned IP addresses and work with public facing IP address space.

Provide the Director, IT Operations and CIO with budgetary requirements for hardware and software needed to support network administration across all sites.

Stay current with technological developments related to network hardware, software, security, and wireless technology as well as best practices which involves reading publications, subscribing to Internet lists, attending conferences and workshops, and meeting with colleagues.

Maintain detailed up-to-date technical and operations documentation for the entire network on the University Intranet.

Assist with server and datacenter maintenance and troubleshooting as needed.

Other duties as assigned

Requirements Bachelors degree in Information Technologies or related field, or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training

3 to 5 years experience in network administration

Display strong end user communication and customer service skills

Strong understanding of technical troubleshooting methodology, including OSI model

Self-directed with strong desire to succeed

Demonstrated excellence in teamwork as well as excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills

Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed

Attention to detail and thorough documentation

Ability to work with a range of technical staff to develop joint solutions

May need to be able to lift 50 lbs. as needed to move equipment

Willing to use a ladder or crawl under desks and tight spaces for troubleshooting equipment, cabling, projectors, etc.

Must be able to sit for long periods at a time and or stand for long periods at a time

Preferred Qualifications Experience in a Higher Education environment

Experience managing Palo Alto Firewalls, Cisco Networking (Catalyst, Nexus, Meraki)

Should be comfortable with direct communication with all levels of technical and business resources

Experience with network development, design, implementation, and maintenance

Proven track record of network architecture development, design, implementation and maintenance.
